Lower Back Pain Relief in Ballarat

Lower back pain is the most common problem walking through our door, and it is rarely as simple as one damaged structure. We work out what is actually driving it, settle it down, then help you build a back that copes with your life.

    What it is

    Understanding lower back pain.

Most lower back pain is a combination of muscle overload, stiffness through the lumbar joints and a nervous system that has become protective of the area. It can start with a single moment, like lifting a box awkwardly, or build slowly over months of sitting, driving and carrying. Pain might sit in one spot, spread across the belt line, or grip when you first stand up after a long stretch of stillness. Imaging often shows changes that are normal for your age and do not explain the pain on their own.

    How myotherapy helps

Treating the driver, not just the sore spot.

Myotherapy begins with an assessment of how your back actually behaves, not just where it hurts. We look at how you bend, hinge, rotate and load through your hips, and we check the tissue by hand. Treatment then releases the muscles doing too much, usually the lumbar erectors, quadratus lumborum and glutes, mobilises the segments that have stopped moving, and calms the local sensitivity with focused soft tissue work or dry needling. The aim is to give you room to move again, then to load that new range so it holds.

    What we commonly see

    Familiar patterns.

No two presentations are identical, but these are the versions of lower back pain that come through the clinic most often.

    Morning stiffness

A back that takes half an hour and a hot shower to loosen up before it feels usable.

    Lifting flare ups

Sharp catches when you bend, lift or twist, often days after the actual event.

    Sitting intolerance

Aching that builds through a long drive, a desk shift or an evening on the couch.

    Recurring episodes

The same back going out every few months without an obvious cause.

    Your treatment plan

    What treatment looks like.

Your first appointment is a full assessment and treatment, and you leave with two or three things to do at home. Acute episodes often settle noticeably within a few sessions. Long standing back pain that has been coming and going for years usually needs a short course of treatment paired with a progressive exercise plan, because the missing piece is almost always capacity rather than another rub. We space visits out as you improve rather than keeping you coming in indefinitely, and we are upfront if we think you need a GP review or imaging.

    01
    Assessment first

We start with a proper conversation about your history, how the pain behaves through the week and what you want to get back to, followed by hands on and movement assessment.

    02
    Targeted treatment

Treatment is directed at what the assessment found, not a set routine. For lower back pain that usually means a combination of hands on techniques chosen for your presentation on the day.

    03
    Your take home plan

You leave with two or three specific things to do between sessions, kept realistic so they actually get done, plus a clear picture of what to expect next.

    Who it affects

    Who we treat for this.

We treat tradespeople and warehouse workers whose backs are loaded all day, desk workers who feel it most after a long week at a screen, parents lifting small children, gym goers who tweaked something under a bar, and older adults managing stiffness that has crept in gradually. The pattern differs in every case, which is why the treatment does too.

    Worth coming in if

Signs myotherapy is a good fit.

    • Pain that keeps returning to the same spot
    • Stiffness that stretching alone does not shift
    • A back that feels weak or unreliable under load
    • Wanting a plan, not just short term relief
