    What it is

Understanding pre and post natal pain.

Through pregnancy, changes in load, posture and ligament laxity shift how the pelvis and lower back share work. Low back ache, pelvic girdle pain, hip discomfort when rolling over in bed and rib tightness as space becomes tighter are all common. After birth, the pattern changes again. Hours of feeding, lifting and carrying in one position load the upper back, neck and shoulders, and the abdominal wall and pelvic floor need time and graded loading to rebuild.

    How myotherapy helps

Treating the driver, not just the sore spot.

Treatment is adapted to your stage and your comfort. We use side lying positioning and supportive pillows so you never need to lie face down, and pressure stays firm enough to be useful while remaining gentle and considered. We work on the muscles around the pelvis and lower back that are taking the extra load, ease the upper back and neck tension that builds through feeding, and give you positional advice for sleeping, sitting and lifting. Simple, realistic exercises are prescribed with your energy levels in mind.

    What we commonly see

    Familiar patterns.

No two presentations are identical, but these are the versions of pre and post natal pain that come through the clinic most often.

    Pelvic and low back

Ache through the belt line and pelvis that worsens with walking or stairs.

    Night discomfort

Hip pain rolling over in bed or settling into a comfortable position.

    Feeding tension

Upper back, neck and shoulder tightness from long periods held in one shape.

    Carrying load

Wrist, forearm and shoulder strain from lifting a growing child all day.

    Your treatment plan

    What treatment looks like.

Many clients come in every few weeks through the second and third trimesters to keep on top of things, then return once they are ready after birth. Post natal care starts gently and is guided by your recovery, your birth and any advice from your midwife, GP or obstetrician. We are conservative and will happily coordinate with your care team. Babies and toddlers are welcome in the room if that is what makes attending possible.

    01
    Assessment first

We start with a proper conversation about your history, how the pain behaves through the week and what you want to get back to, followed by hands on and movement assessment.

    02
    Targeted treatment

Treatment is directed at what the assessment found, not a set routine. For pre and post natal pain that usually means a combination of hands on techniques chosen for your presentation on the day.

    03
    Your take home plan

You leave with two or three specific things to do between sessions, kept realistic so they actually get done, plus a clear picture of what to expect next.

    Who it affects

    Who we treat for this.

Pregnant clients at any stage, new parents in the first year, and those a bit further along who never quite got on top of the aches that started with carrying. We also treat clients through longer feeding periods where the upper back has taken the brunt.
